Aldactone belongs to a group of medicines called ‘diuretics’ – you may know these as ‘water’ tablets. You may have gone to your doctor because you had swollen ankles or were short of breath. This can happen when your heart's pumping action has become weak because of too much fluid in your body. This is called 'congestive heart failure'. Pushing extra fluid around your body means your heart has to work harder. Your doctor has given you Aldactone to help you lose the extra fluid from your body. This will mean your heart has to do less work. You lose the extra fluid as urine, so you may need to go to the toilet more often while you are taking Aldactone.
Direction to Use:
The adult dose varies from 25 mg to 400 mg spironolactone a day. If you are not sure how much to take, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Side Effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or headache may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor of pharmacist promptly. To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Use
Aldactone is used to treat breast cancer. Dose: 25 mg/day
The adult dose is 25 mg/day, based on your individual response to the medicine. For children, this is 40 mg/day. This dose is suitable for children below 8 years of age. Aldactone is commonly used for sudden decrease or loss of hearing. This is due to its ability to lower blood pressure in the brain and kidneys. Aldactone is also used to treat high blood pressure, which is usually only raised in adults. This may be due to underlying heart conditions, surgery or medication. Dosage is adjusted in response to the individual's medical condition and response to Aldactone.
For children, this is 20 mg/day. Aldactone is usually taken before the onset of puberty. Its effects may last. Aldactone is usually taken on an empty stomach or at a fixed time period (for example, on an empty stomach: one hour before a meal, one hour after a meal, or one hour before a high-fat meal). Your doctor may occasionally direct you to take a meal or a drink of water while you are taking Aldactone.
The time interval between meals may be increased in some cases to one hour. You may take your dose on the same day you take Aldactone or one hour before you take any meal or drink. Avoid doubling the dose of Aldactone or taking it just once. You may take this combination together with a glass of water. The dosage is dependent on the individual's response to Aldactone and the patient's age, blood pressure and kidney function.
